Building the skills for a life of independence, connection, and confidence.
Recovery from mental illness isn't only about managing symptoms—it's about developing the practical and social skills needed to live the life you want. OHI's Skills Development Services provide adults with hands-on support to gain the skills and confidence vital to lasting independence, well-being, and full engagement in community life.
We serve adults living with mental health challenges, including those with co-occurring substance use disorders, who want to grow in their independence. Whether someone is living on their own, with family, in a residential setting, or experiencing homelessness, our team meets them where they are—in real-life environments where skills are learned and practiced where they matter most.
Our Approach
Unlike traditional clinical treatment, skills development is about doing, not just talking. Our trained specialists work alongside individuals to build confidence through real-life practice, ensuring new skills can be applied directly and lead to greater independence and community participation.
The core goals are hope, skills, empowerment, and support—because through skills development, individuals gain the autonomy, capability, and self-determination needed for a more independent and fulfilling life.

OHI's Expertise
Since 1979, OHI has been delivering skills-based behavioral health services in Maine—long before "psychiatric rehabilitation" became a national evidence-based standard. Our specialists understand that skill-building is not a one-size-fits-all process. We meet each person where they are, move at their pace, and celebrate every step forward on the path to a more independent, connected, and fulfilling life.
