Every person deserves the opportunity to live a full, self-directed life in the community they call home.

OHI has been supporting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) for decades—walking alongside individuals as they build skills, deepen community connections, and work toward the milestones that matter most to them. Our approach is grounded in the belief that the right supports, tailored to the whole person, can make all the difference.

We provide person-centered services designed to reduce barriers and increase independence—not by defining what someone can't do, but by building on their strengths, honoring their goals, and surrounding them with the consistent, individualized support they need to thrive.

What Our IDD Services Include:

  • Personalized support plans built around each individual's strengths, needs, and vision for their life
  • Skills development for independent living, community participation, and social connection
  • Emotional support and guidance for building and maintaining healthy relationships
  • Coordination with healthcare providers, community organizations, and natural supports
  • Assistance accessing community resources, activities, and opportunities for personal fulfillment

Prader-Willi Syndrome—Specialized Care

OHI is proud to be one of Maine's specialized providers of support services for adults living with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS)—and we take that responsibility seriously.

PWS is a complex genetic condition characterized by an insatiable appetite that, without proper structure and support, can lead to life-threatening obesity and serious health complications. Managing PWS requires far more than general disability support—it demands a team with specific expertise, carefully structured environments, and a compassionate, whole-person approach.

OHI's PWS programs prioritize round-the-clock care while actively encouraging personal growth, community engagement, and a genuine sense of belonging. Our staff works closely with each individual to:

  • Monitor food intake and maintain structured, physician-guided meal plans.
  • Develop and support individualized exercise and wellness programs.
  • Create safe, food-secure environments with routines that reduce food-related anxiety.
  • Coordinate medical, behavioral, and community services.
  • Foster meaningful community involvement and personal fulfillment.

Living with Prader-Willi Syndrome presents lifelong challenges—but with the right support, people with PWS can live safe, active, and connected lives. OHI is committed to providing exactly that.
