OHI's Home of Your Own program delivers personalized, flexible support to adults with intellectual disabilities and autism who live in their own homes or with their families—right where life happens. Whether you need a few hours of support each week or more consistent daily assistance, our team is here to help you live the life you've envisioned, on your terms.

What is the Home of Your Own Program?

Home of Your Own is OHI's MaineCare Sections 21 and 29 Personal Support Program—part of Maine's Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waiver system. These federally authorized programs exist specifically to help individuals with IDD and autism live and thrive in community settings rather than institutional ones, with support tailored entirely to their individual Person-Centered Plan.

OHI is approved by the Maine Department of Health and Human Services to provide Home Support services under both Section 21 (Comprehensive Waiver) and Section 29 (Community Support Waiver). We also welcome individuals and families who choose to fund services privately.

These programs are designed to supplement—not replace—the natural, personal, family, work, and community relationships that are already part of your life. Think of OHI as a flexible, trusted partner that fills in the gaps, builds your skills, and helps you move toward greater independence.

How We Support You

Every person we support receives a customized plan built around their interests, talents, and personal outcome goals. Our trained staff work alongside individuals—not for them, but with them—teaching, mentoring, and supporting at whatever level is needed. Support can include:

  • Daily living skills—budgeting, grocery shopping, cooking, medication management, and maintaining a healthy home
  • Community access and participation—transportation, social activities, volunteerism, and community connections
  • Employment and education support—exploring vocational interests and pursuing meaningful work or learning opportunities
  • Health and wellness—building routines that support long-term physical and mental well-being
  • Self-advocacy—developing the confidence and skills to speak up for your own needs and goals
  • Financial management—understanding budgeting and money management for greater independence

Who is Eligible?

Home of Your Own is available to adults with intellectual disabilities or autism who are enrolled in MaineCare and meet eligibility requirements under Sections 21 or 29. To receive services, individuals must enroll in MaineCare and be medically eligible—and a Case Manager can help with the application process. OHI also welcomes individuals who prefer to pay privately for services.
